We now have a squadron website, and this will be your source for up-to-date information. We will populate the site in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for updates.
This year we have opted out of the L'auto-cadet fundraising program. We found that it was an overly complicated and labour-intensive way to raise a relatively small amount of money. The Sponsoring Committee is exploring a variety of fundraising activities for the coming year.
One of our parents is helping to organize a fundraising event for the Squadron on Saturday, October 27, 2018. Bike2Fund will take place at the Mansfield Athletic Club and will be a great opportunity to have fun with friends or colleagues, and raise money in support of 1 West Montreal. If your employer or someone else in your network might be interested in getting involved, please see details here. Let me know if you are interested, and I will put you in touch with the event organizer.
As you know, the air cadet training program is mostly provided free of charge. However, cadets, with the support of their parents/guardians, are requested to raise $180 per year through their participation in squadron fundraising activities or by making a donation to the squadron. This enables the squadron to provide activities not paid for by the Canadian Forces, awards, familiarization flights, training facilities rental, sports, social activities, and much more.
All donations are eligible for charitable donation receipts for income tax purposes. If you are able to make a donation in support of the Squadron, there are several possible payment options:
By cheque payable to #1 WEST MONTREAL SQUADRON sent by mail or dropped off in person (4625 Ste-Catherine West St. Westmount, QC H3Z 1S4)
One-time $180 online donation via our CanadaHelps Donation Page
Monthly $15 online donations via our CanadaHelps Donation Page (click on the donate monthly box near the bottom of the page).
For anyone unable or who prefers not to make an annual donation, there will be several fundraising events throughout the year, and those cadets will be expected to participate in these activities.
The squadron is always looking for new corporate, foundation, and individual donors. If you know of anyone who might be interested in supporting the squadron, please contact us. Anyone who facilitates a corporate or other donation will be exempt from the annual fundraising requirement.
Many employers offer a matching program to encourage employee involvement in the community. Here is a partial list of Canadian companies that offer such programs. Please consider checking to see if your employer offers this donation incentive - your donation could have double the impact.
Congratulations to all of our cadets who attended summer camp. In our weekly blogs, we will show pictures from the various training centres. This week we will start with the Saint-Jean flying school where 7 cadets from 1 West Montréal trained to become pilots. It is a tradition for cadet pilots to be 'dunked' after their first solo flights. Here are a few pictures of WO1 Cho who earned his private pilot licence, as well as Lt Woods and CI Carlesimo, who taught at the flying school this summer.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
